Sometimes when visiting Acadia National Park, you just want to get away from the crowds. Fortunately, there are several great trails near the park that offer you a taste of Maine’s natural beauty.
Forbes Pond Preserve Trail
Three stacked trails totaling 1.9 miles head through a pine forest with an active beaver dam near the path. A few scattered deciduous tress makes this a colorful hike in autumn. Dogs can be off leash in some sections of the trail. The trailhead is off of Maine Route 195 south of U.S. Hwy. 1.
Corea Heath Preserve Trail
The 0.4-mile out and back trail crosses a coastal heath, which turns a lovely red in October. At the end of the tail is a raised platform that looks out onto a bog. The trail is open April through October and allows leashed dogs. Trailhead is off of Maine Route 195 south of U.S. 1.
Simon Trail
The 1.1-mile lollipop trail loops through a forest of large pines with ferns, mosses and mushrooms in the understory. Boards cross wet areas along the path, managed by the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. Leashed dogs are allowed. Trailhead is off of Maine Route 204 east of Main Route 3/Bar Harbor Road.
Trenton Community Trail
The 2.5-mile lollipop trail runs through a pine forest and includes a boardwalk over a bog. Leashed dogs are allowed. The trailhead is at the end of Gateway Center Drive, west of Bar Harbor Road/Maine Route 3 north of Trenton.
Lamoine State Park Campground Trail
A 1.3-mile trail, part of it runs along Frenchman Bay. Mollusk shells can be collected from the beach, and there’s even a treehouse to climb. The trail is open mid-May through mid-October, and leashed dogs are allowed. The campground is odd of Maine Route 184 south of Ellsworth.
